Competition Piece
on: June 11, 2008, 10:23:34 PM
Decided to play something modern cuz almost nobody on this island plays that kinda stuff. Deciding between 2 Ravels: Une Barque Sur L'Ocean and Jeux D'eau. I love both of them. Can't decided which one I should play. Which do you prefer?

I think Une Bareque Sul L'Ocean would work better if you also played other pieces from the Miroirs, so if you're only going to play one I would go with Jeux D'eau, you can let people hear more different things in that. If you're also going to do the Oiseaux Tristes and Alborada del Gracioso I would go with the Une Barque sur L'Ocean.

I like Jeux D'eau better. I think you'll get a split vote with respect to these two great works. The ultimate question is most likely, "What piece do you feel more. What is your heart telling you"?

Good luck.

The Jeux d'Eau for me is definately evokes the image of water and its different forms and movements.  The name could not be better.  Une barque sur l'ocean sets more of an atmosphere... again the name suits it perfectly.  Jeux d'Eau would seem more difficult (not too sure, I've played it on the side not actually studied it in depth) because it has the same sweeping arpeggios as the latter, but it also introduces many different difficulties that intertwine.
