Weight transference
on: May 10, 2004, 09:10:55 PM
Experimenting today with the feeling of transfering weight from the body, specifically the center of the body - the concentration of weight from where we sit on the chair - to the fingers, feeling the 'butt' getting lighter as the weight of the arms (including the whole body?), is supported by a finger (or chord). And then shifting that weight back to the center as the arm, and pressure on the finger(s), lightens.

Playing repeated notes in both hands together, 4321 on Ds and octave apart, for example, repeating each note with a slow push off from the wrist, I felt weight moving from the center to the arms and finger.

Is this the idea? (Perhas not clear...)

The feet feel stable and flat on the ground, but what role do they play in providing extra 'force' when required? (If any?)

It was interesting after noting how the weight can be moved back and forth between the arm/fingers and body, how it also applied to simple tasks like pushing my mobile away from me, for example. I could feel that 'pushing' coming from my 'center', or rather as a coordinated set of movements which were stemming from the body, not just the fingers.

It began to make sense relating to Bernhard's analogy that in martial arts, the 'fist' is only the point of contact, the 'power', however, comes from the center.

Becoming aware of this 'transference' of weight, also brought into play an ability to distinguish between how the upper arm interacts and moves with the forearm, wrist motion, hand, and fingers.

Is this the idea?

Exactly! :D
The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side. (Hunter Thompson)
