Concert programme ideas
on: June 13, 2008, 08:28:49 PM
What do people think of these recital programmes that I am considering. Any opinions (especially bad) will be greatly appreciated.

Beethoven op 26
Beethoven op110

interval

Szymanowski Etudes
Liszt Sonata in B minor

OR

Bach Chromatic Fantasy and fugue
Szymanowski Etudes
Beethoven op110

Interval

Chopin Polonaise op44
Liszt sonata

Beethoven op26
Beethoven op110

Interval

Godowsky Waltz's after Chopin's Waltzs
Liszt sonata

ummm they don't feel right....but that is round about what I want. I must include Liszt sonata and Beethoven op110. I really want to get the Symanowski in there, but they don't quite fit....any ideas for another piece to match?

Thanks

Well, you want something less meaty.  If you're really doing the Liszt Sonata, then you need something that'll take less work to go with it!

So, for an opening piece, Brahms Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 21, would work very well.  Following that with the Beethoven and the intermission.  You could start the second half with with Barber Excursions and follow them with the Liszt Sonata.

What do you think of that?
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

I wouldn't do two Beethoven sonatas after each other, that would be too much

In the exceptional case of THOSE two sonatas, I *personally* wouldn't mind, and even like it. You often see two classical sonatas back to back in recitals nowadays anyways ... Sokolov comes to mind, and many others do this.
