Definition of music?
on: June 19, 2008, 06:16:31 PM
post your own definition of music..

My definition: music is the air we breath, without it we would die.

Post also if you want comparing other music genres...some may think that punk is not music, that metal is only full of repeated riffs or so on and so forth...

That's too loose:  you could also be defining oxygen.

Better:  Music is organized noise.

Passion. The Passions that are too extreme to merely SAY are Music.

But, on another level, I think that Music is synonymous to Life. Look around you; everything you see is functioning on its own Rhythm, its own Frequency, its own Pitch. It truly amazes me (but that is off topic).

Better:  Music is organized noise.

Even that definition is slightly flawed, given that there is a lot of music out there that isn't organized and is still accepted to be music. My definition: intentionally made noise made by organic substances such as humans.

Music is resonant noise. "Music to my ears" could be anything, it simply means it resonates with you. Like, music is in the ear of the beholder.

Is the "music of the spheres," then, unintentional and therefore not music?  Are the errant strains of the "Aeolian Harp," then, not music?

Are my Soul's unintentional yearnings, then, not music?

Like a fart?  I used to know a kid who would get such resonance by farting on the gymnasium floor...  I was always waiting for him to crap himself...

How 'bout just expression in sound?

dang, that could be a fart too... >:(

We need to take noise out of the definition.  Music is not noise.

hmmmm..

i think I agree more with what disarray said.."music is organized noise. Cuz when there's silence, there's no more noise. However..I remember reading that schumman or someone else considered silence as music..dnt remember..XD

We need to take noise out of the definition.  Music is not noise.

So what's your definition?
noise is sound..at least I think so

Music - it cannot be defined.

Sounds in time organized or framed that convey abstract ideas and (in my opinion should) provide emotional catharsis.

It can be trite or profound and just about anything in between. This is a weighty subject that can be debated endlessly, if one has the time.

Just because noise is sound, and music is sound, it does not follow that music is noise.
I think organization is a part of what music is.  Ultimately, I believe music is a spiritual thing, and what it actually is reaches beyond our present perceptions.

There was a man walking into a music store.  A woman who was playing the piano stops and asks the man, "Do you like music."  He says, "Very much, but it doesn't matter, keep playing."

Marik nailed it again. 8)

But I think that the more interesting question is: where does music happen? Is it just the mechanics and/or biology, measurable and quantifiable and all, or does it happen somewhere -else-, too? This question has been bugging me for quite some time...

According to the "most reliable" source a.k.a. the Internet:

Music:
an artistic form of auditory communication incorporating instrumental or vocal tones in a structured and continuous manner.

I think the definition should be left blank in the dictionary.

Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
