Mahler Symphony Transcriptions
on: October 16, 2002, 10:52:47 PM
Hi.

I understand that Mahler made his own piano transcriptions -- or reductions -- of all of his Symphonies.  I even heard the piano arrangement of Symphony #5 on CD, played by Mahler himself.  (Actually, it was a Welte-Mignon reproducing piano roll).

I was wondering:  Does anyone know if these transcriptions are available in print?  How about other Mahler Symphony piano transcriptions, by other transcribers?

Thanks,
Scarbo

Dis would be cool - I wonder if it's possible to transcribe Mahler for the piano and create a listenable effect?
Just thought I might dig up a 4 year old topic ;D
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

There is an asian pianist who did Mahler I.  The cd is listed on this site somewhere.

I think Mahler wrote a short score, three to four staves, and then orchestrated it.  You might look for Mahler manuscripts to find those, instead of transcriptions.  He wasn't really transcribing his work (if what I read is true).  Those short scores would be more a part of the process he used to compose.
