Are the Beethoven-Liszt symphonies particularly difficult in comparison to other Liszt pieces? No. 6 in particular.

Yes, they are among his more difficult. They have been called the most unpianistic pieces Liszt ever wrote. They're awesome music, though. The sixth is very difficult to follow because of the rhythmic complexity.
