Finishing your practice session, which tempo?
on: June 29, 2008, 10:21:44 AM
When I am practicing a certain piece, I always play with different tempos. I play at the fast, desired tempo and then i play at a slow tempo with concentrating on the individual notes, and then maybe be play at an extra fast tempo HS. So, I have many tempos to practice with.

There is something called Post-Practice Improvement, which I really beleive that it has a very important factor in the speed and correctness with which you learn a piece. So, my question is, what tempo should I end my practice with so that it is best for my post-practice improvement?? Should I end it in the fastest tempo I could, so that the next time I practice I can play it in the same tempo more relaxed, or should I end it in a slow, accented tempo so that the next time I play all the notes exactly??

The most common mistake students make to negate PPI is to play fast just before quitting practice. The last thing you do before quitting should be the most correct and best example of what you want to achieve, which usually a moderate to slow speed. Your last run-through seems to have an inordinately strong PPI effect. - Source: Chang's book.

I would have presumed this would be best before I looked it up, just beacuse I felt making sure accuracy is secure and the neccessary movements clearly engrained and accentuated by slow practice would yield better results.

I've never put a great deal of thought into how I finish a practice session. Mine usually end with someone calling my name in order to do a family chore.

Having said that, I would think that a slow, accurate practice of the last piece in your agenda would be useful; it would reinforce your tactile memory of the work.

I agree... but I personally find it so difficult to discipline myself to do!
