Other kinds of good music?
on: July 10, 2008, 02:22:33 PM
We all love and enjoy classical music, but what other kinds of music do Piano Street members enjoy and consider to be good music?

I like rock bands such as Smashing Pumpkins, Kill Hannah, Nine Inch Nails, and Soundgarden.

I also enjoy more electronic bands like KLF, Prodigy, and Depeche Mode.

Penguin Cafe Orchestra.

Humorous songs (e.g. Flanders and Swann, Tom Lehrer, Ivor Cutler, Jake Thackray).

The Shout.

I've always had a weakness for stuff that doesn't fit into pigeonholes easily.

And lots of jazz, rock, blues, folk, reggae.....

Blues (especially Muddy Waters), 70's & 80's Punk, The Jam, The Who, Pink Floyd.  8)

I know the last 3 are not "kinds" of music, but I did not know what catagory they would fall in.  :'(

Soundgarden.

I dig whenever some Soundgarden comes on, they're a lot of fun!

I grew up on a lot of metal, but don't dig it as much anymore.  Fun to listen to now and again, but I don't seek it.

I like a lot of Tom Waits, The Sadies, Luke Ducet...  One of my favorite discoveries was Klezmer, good stuff!

Continuing with the extreme theme (no rhyme intended...):

They're technically a grind band, but they could definitely also be considered metal. However, my favorite genre aside from classical and metal however will always be jazz -- in all its forms.

I enjoy a lot of differet types of music. Even classical music it self provides extremely different styles of music. For instance Bach and Penderecki!

Very brutal metal is very much my thing right now. Such as Meshuggah.

Also hard-core punk, different types of folk music, Jazz, much rock, and of course Rihanna :)

Indie and anything 80's.

Well, okay, tbh, as long as it's not "JAZZ" jazz (if that makes any sense at all - the really stereotypical, non-Gershwin-ey type :)), it's okay. I'm cool w/ jazz, just not that "steamy, let's try wayyyy too hard to be overtly sexual" type.

EDIT: as long as it's not "JAZZ" jazz or pop. . forgot about that little "genre."

As far as metal goes I like old Metallica and Megadeth from any period.

80s Metallica is excellent.  I was at the pub once and they played the first half of Kill em All - it's the best drinking music.  Megadeth is good as well, although I don't know them that well and never really liked Mustaine's vocals.

Piano Street Magazine:
Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
