Amateur and his piano composition
on: July 11, 2008, 01:21:50 PM
Hi, I'm 17 years old and have only been playing piano for about 10 months now.. I composed a piano sonata 4 months ago and was going to see what you pros thought about it. =)

Check it out here:

It's called Back to 17th

Btw, I can't read sheet music.. so wrote it by ear.

(EDIT)

This is not me playing as I thought everyone would understand. =)
I just want critics on the composition itself. :P

Huh ... how did you make the midi file if you don't know how to read music ? Aren't midi softwares simply blank staves ? I don't get it ...

That's my question- you seem to always beat me to the punch.
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

Is there MIDI software that hooks to an electronic piano and transcribes what you play into written notes?

Well I just click out every note as I see it fit.. by ear. Nothing weird about that? I know some stuff about chord progression thought. But what do you think of the piece itself? :)

Please don't be too harsh as it's my first piano composition hehe.  I'm not completely happy with the bass line though.

Not a pro but wanted to comment.

Well since you asked about the composition, it reminds of Beethoven in a way. This is very short to be a sonata, well a movement of a sonata that is. May be a prelude.

Depending on the quality of your keyboard being used for midi, the result will be far from sounding like a robot.  The Yamaha S90es actually taking its samples from the Hand crafted $250,000 S700 grand piano.  People can argue that the feel and quality is not that of an acoustic piano, but then there are many present composers that would disagree.  The quality of current keyboard FOR RECORDING are rivaling those of acoustic.

With that said, for performing and casual playing I prefer an acoustic piano for the full energy it produces.
