A man after my own heart, but this is a massive subject and a bit difficult to know where to start.

Much of Thalberg has yet to be recorded, but you will need to have a pretty top notch mechanism for some of it. Some solo works by Herz, Henselt, Kalkbrenner, Pixis, Leybach etc..... are worth looking at.

If you have not done so, it is worth trawling through John Kerseys site https://henseltlibrary.org/ . He has recorded many completely forgotten pieces and has a reasonable amont of pdf's.

For complete obscurity, check out my Hay on Wye Pilgramage thread on pianophilia.

However, to reach some jewels you have to search through a bit of mud, but it can be fun.

MacDowell is nice, and not played very often.
It all happens on Discworld, where greed and ignorance influence human behavior... and perfectly ordinary people occasionally act like raving idiots.

A world, in short, totally unlike our own.

It is indeed a massive topic.

Here are a few quick suggestions from my personal favourites, with imslp links:

Easy:

Alkan:
Song of the Madwoman on the seashore - no. 8 of this set:
https://imslp.org/wiki/25_Preludes_in_all_Major_and_Minor_Keys%2C_Op.31_%28Alkan%2C_Charles-Valentin%29

Not too difficult:

Thalberg:
transcription of Casta diva - no. 19 of this set:
https://imslp.org/wiki/The_Art_of_Singing_Applied_to_the_Piano%2C_Op.70_%28Thalberg%2C_Sigismond%29

Les Soirees de Pausilippe:
https://imslp.org/wiki/24_Pensees_Musicales%2C_Op.75_%28Thalberg%2C_Sigismond%29

Probably somewhat harder, but imo a beautiful Chopinesque piece:

Liapunov:
Nocturne op.8
https://imslp.org/wiki/Nocturne%2C_Op.8_%28Lyapunov%2C_Sergei%29

Flashy and quite difficult (but not nearly as hard as it sounds):

Tausig:
Das Geisterschiff:
https://imslp.org/wiki/Nocturne%2C_Op.8_%28Lyapunov%2C_Sergei%29

Very challenging (great piece though):

Tausig:
Fantasia on Moniuszko's 'Halka':
https://imslp.org/wiki/Fantasia_on_Moniuszko%27s_%27Halka%27_%28Tausig%2C_Carl%29

It could also be well worth your while to investigate some of the Bortkiewicz that rachfan has posted in the audition room.

Thalberg's Nocturne, Op.21 No.3 is close to exquisite.

You can hear a recording at the Burgmueller site.

It's mislabeled as Op.23 No.2:

I would be inclined to work your way through a few of the Op70 before attempting any of the large scale works.

Even if you are already have a solid technique, it gives you an insight into his style.

All of the old expensive Marco Polo issues, have now been released under Naxos at a fraction of the price. These should still be available on Amazon etc.

The best recording of Thalberg I have ever heard was Earl Wild playing the Thalberg/Rossini Semiramide, closely followed by Nicolosi's Thalberg/Bellini Sonnambula. Both can keep the singing line going whilst the arpegg shower was in progress.

Argh...seriously. I have tons of sheet music here on my computer and from 90% of it I don't have a clue how it sounds like. There are really rare, beautiful pieces there, waiting for me to be played and I don't even know it... it makes me sad  :'( :)

Time to go to the CD store then. Either that or you could download them.
