Chopin polonaise, op. 53

And last, but certainly not least, the accents on c above middle c throughout bars 143-151. Im sure its some sort of pedal on the mediant, but its an eerie effect when you play them.  I wonder if thats what Chopin wanted.

Agreed, an eerie surreal effect; probably because it's syncopated to occur sometimes off the beat of the music. For me it conjures up a vision of a distant church bell mourning the dead; a death knell sounding after a battle.
