Ped.u.Verschiebg <--What does this mean?
on: July 30, 2008, 01:08:43 AM
Hello,

I found this direction under a passage in one of Zemlinsky's Rustic Dances.

The score can be found here:
https://imslp.info/files/imglnks/usimg/6/67/IMSLP02084-Zemlinsky_op_01.pdf

You can find the words in question under the last line of the 2nd dance.

What I can figure is that "Ped." refers to the loud (right) pedal, "u." is an abbreviation of und with means "and" in German I believe, and "Verschiebg" is a shortening of the word "Verschiebung" which means moving; shifting. Does this mean to keep changing the pedal? I would really appreciate any theories or insight.

Thank you,
Dustin

Hi Dustin,
your guesses of the words are correct. Only the reference to Verschiebung ("shifting"), I am quite sure it means the left (una corda) pedal. Thus, you would play with both right (Ped.) and left (Versch.) pedal. It would also make sense musically with the going from pp to ppp, virtually fading away in the end.
Hope that helps,

"Verschiebung" means movement or shift, and refers to the fact that when the left pedal is depressed the keyboard is moved to play "una corda". You can find the indication used in Busoni's transcription of Bach's Prelude and Fugue in D Major, and probably elsewhere in music published in Germany, though I assume it is not very frequently encountered.
