“The Sound Always Comes First” — Andrea Bonatta on Teaching Liszt

Why tone matters more than speed, why reading Goethe matters as much as practising octaves, and how a single insight can transform a performance. Italian pianist and scholar Andrea Bonatta has spent decades exploring the contradictions of Franz Liszt, from performer to man of faith, virtuoso to poet. Here, in conversation with Piano Street at Liszt Utrecht 2026, he shares his vision. Read more

I liked that very much.  A little minimilista.  Excellent pianist.  Wierd pieces...well, you have your choice these days.  Like Stockhausen's Licht series.  Now that's wierd.  YOu shoot off paper missiles from the keyboard.

A very good and authentic piece! The repeats seem very convincing to me. "Weird" sounds differently, in my book.

One of the Finnissy verdi transcriptions.  The left hand is tonal while the right hand is completely atonal throughout.  Creates a very unsettling feel.  Like musical multiple personality disorder.

I've always thought of Henry Cowell's The Banshee as really weird. You play it by rubbing the strings inside the piano. spooky, almost sounds like if you listen to it too closely you will die!! :) . If I remember correctly Cowell challenged people to find out which instrument was playing this piece, no one guessed it was a piano.

Must find that piece!!  You think it would be at the Julliard music book store?  Or patelson's?  What's the exact name of the piece?

I know that Jonathan Powell has a free live recording which can be found on his website, among other stuff.
If you can find the score, it'll probably be part of a larger set of the complete transcriptions.
