Recordings of "Practice" scales, Hanon, Czerny, etc
on: August 19, 2008, 04:14:57 AM
This may be an strange request, but I would be interested in hearing the recordings of people during their "practice" time.
People often discuss the value of various practice methods, I would like to hear a professional pianist and his/her versions of scales, even Hanon.

Hanon is often discussed here and people often stress the importance of making it musical. Or playing Hanon with some rhythmic variety (or at least in different keys).

I want to HEAR examples of a GOOD pianist doing some of this.

People also discuss scales and doing them in different patterns, and various rhythms, etc.
Again I want to HEAR examples of this.

So......... I wonder if someone could direct me to a place (youtube?) where I could hear some of this. Or perhaps there are some recordings here already?

Thanks

YOU WISH! Although there is a recording of Idil Beret playing Brahms' 51 exercises.
Trying to return to playing the piano.

The problem with recording hanon, is that although you might produce a desired sound your technique to produce it might be inefficient. So it is pretty useless to listen to recordings of these.

Videos might be more helpful than recordings, indeed.

For Hanon, get the Hal Leonard edition of the first 20 exercises. It comes with a CD that provides orchestral accompaniment to each exercise, with a different style for each exercise. One of the most hilarious CDs ever. Apparently this will make Hanon “musical” :o

ABRSM and Trinity publish every two years a set of CDs with the pieces/scales required for their exams. In them you will find all the scales played (no too fast though), to the standard examiners would like to hear them. Particularly interesting are the ABRSM jazz examinations, since they have many unusual scales and modes. These CDs are usually available in music shops, but this one will certainly have them:

(look at the left column for CDs)

There are many CDs for “etudes” (that is, technical exercises that are also pieces – Czerny, Cramer, Heller, etc.). Here are some:

Burgmuller - Have a look at this CD where Ramiro Schiavoni has recorde 125 (!) of Burgmuller´s studies:

Czerny – Super virtuoso Francesco Libetta plays Czerny op. 740:

Heller – Jan Vermuellen plays all etudes op. 45, op. 46 and op. 47

Also, have a look at this thread:

(Heller thread – Lots of pdf files with Heller scores and MP3 to listen to)

Also have a look here where French pianist François Renée Duchable demonstrates Hanon, scale and arpeggio playing on French TV.

These vídeos have been discussed in this thread:

That's strange.  Idil Biret told me personally that at least 1/4 of her recordings were pirated from yours.
