Lack of interest possibly.
Not much of Saint Saens piano music is in general repetoire, apart from possibly 2nd concerto and that awful Carnival thingy. Even less of his solo output.

I think he is generally underplayed, it is a shame that there isn't any of his music here. Well, his etudes for example are extremely good in my opinion, and so are the fourth and fifth piano concertos. Other than that his mazurkas aren't too bad either, but this is of course just my personal opinion. I am surprised that there seems to be so little interest in his piano works.

I love his organ works and even more so his violin pieces. The 3rd concerto is a particular favourite of mine and the Andante and Rondo Capricioso is heart wrenchingly beautiful.
I just do not think that he rose to the same heights with his piano solo works.

I respect that opinion, and in fact teachers I have spoken to about his music has said similar things. That things came so easy for him, that he never went really deep in his composing. And that is true, his music isn't at all as touching as Beethoven's or Chopin's, for example, but there are some really good works in both piano-orchestra and solo piano pieces. Forgot to mention, his op. 89, Africa for piano and orchestra is really nice, I think

Here's something!
I have quite a lot of this seriously under-rated and misunderstood composer. Please let me know if you have any specific requirements

The etudes are all pre-eminently worth playing.

I'm simply saying that all of the etudes are great pieces that should be played.
