Composing something original
on: September 08, 2008, 02:17:55 PM
hello people!

i've always loved classical music, partly the reason i started playing piano was because just listening to pieces simply wasnt enough for me, i wanted to play what i was hearing ;D so. here we are today with thousands and thousands of compositions by various composers. petty much you can find some music thats to your liking.
how ever i always wanted to write my own stream of classical. nothing serious btw just a little passage to maybe keep for when i'm more advanced so i can build it up better.

however. the last two mini, mini, tiny little passages i have composed, (about 1 bar line) always ends up sounding like chopin. scratch that, it is Chopin. noo i'm not trying to brag at all, and im not trying to say anything else on the matter that would be condsidered bragging. im just saying that sometimes i might be messing around with some keys, trying to come up with something, you know, find a melody etc. so i like how it sounds, and i write it down, however when i finish it and re-play it i recognise it from somewhere else.

For instance, right now i just finished my second mini theme, and the first bass line notes are directly pulled from chopins nocturne in C# minor, then a few seconds later followed by some notes from the nocturne op.27 no.1 its weird because i'm not doing it on purpose, it just comes out. I have never tried to play any of those 2 nocturnes, have only listened to them a few times, soooo..the bottom line is (i should get to the point more quickly) is this considerd "stealing" or "ripoff" ?

sounding like chopin is one thing but, having portions of his exact notes written down and claiming it as yours...i dunno.. :-\
Playing Piano is the easiest thing in the world, All you have to do is have the right finger on the right key at the right moment.

I think there's no problem with it unless you take out a whole passage from a piece. If it's 1-2 bars, it's nothing.

Another idea is to deliberately take out Chopin "licks" and make a remix. Or something like PDQ Bach would do. Mix genres.
