What industry does everyone work in/study?
on: September 22, 2008, 04:00:47 AM
I know nearly everyone on here plays an instrument and heaps live off music but some of us work in other areas, eg I'm in IT.

I work as an Architectural Technician, producing drawings for the construction industry, on computer.

My speciality is purpose made joinery, having been a joiner for 12 yrs. before my step-up into the drawing office.

Sometimes it can be fun, but there can also be a lot of repetition.
If God really exists, then why haven't I got more fingers?

I just quit my job back in August to become a full-time student.  I worked 6.5 miserable years at a medical billing company and decided it was time to move on.  It took some planning and adjusting to go from two incomes down to one, but it's so worth it.  I couldn't be happier.  Going to school and working full-time really took a toll on me and I got burned out after a few years.

I'm also going into IT and hope to land some programming job after I graduate.  For now, I'm designing sites here and there.  Nothing special.

I'm one of the management team of a theatre. It's a fantastic job, I love it and couldn't imagine myself doing anything else.

Occasionally I help out at some of the other performance venues in the city, when they need some support, so I get to be involved with all sorts of shows - I certainly never get bored!

Drywall mudding and taping actually.  I just did a quick google on what rendering is, and it seems similar to what they used to do to indoor walls - lathe and plaster.  I've had to go over some plaster walls, and they are WAVEY!  But very tough.  We don't find so many fist-sized holes in plaster walls.

I remember some of your old posts about putting together concerts.  I thought it was a good way of doing things, and if I ever get good at this instrument I would like to try the same.

I've only mud and taped once in my life when I was helping my dad with his house.  It was then when I uttered the words "NEVER again".  LOL, it's a lot of work!

hahah, yes it's a nice perk of this job - most people hate doing it ;D  A lot of do-it-yourselfers would rather not do taping, so we're in high demand.  I cringe when somebody calls for a job and tells me they've already done some of it - their efforts usually just make my job harder than if they'd done nothing.

I know, looks crazy after study. TAFE is kinda like uni only less theory and more practical work. It works different to uni, we pick the areas of the course we want to do (certificates) but I'll probably be there for another 1 and 1/2 years yet and have been there for 6 months at the end of this year.

No, that was half a lifetime ago. They laid me off when John Ogdon died - and I only got the job turning for him cos I, being ridiculously skinny, was the only one who could fit alongside him....
