ABRSM PerfDip Piano Program Suggestions please!
on: September 26, 2008, 08:05:27 PM
I have Beethovens Op10no2 as my core piece, and Dubussy's La Puerta del Vino for contemporary. Was considering Brahms for Romantic, not sure which piece, and Bach or Scarlatti for Baroque. I know Bach's No9 in E BWV 878.

Any suggestions here? How I should go about choosing pieces based around the Beethoven? I was thinking of doing Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Schoenberg Op19 to finish. Would an all German program like this be any advantage in terms of justifying the musical continuity for program notes?

An all German program could be one option, I'm not saying that is my first choice, but wondering more about how to go about choosing a program. I understand that there should be some line of continuity between the pieces, just not sure what kind of line that should be...I'll be doing the program in Thailand as that's where i am going to school at the moment.

I think that your picking pieces from different eras is a good bet. I wouldn't worry about selecting contrasting works (in terms of mood or nationality) as judges, in my experience, tend to like players that show diversity.

Good luck.

I'm preparing for the same exam (did DipLCM just over a year ago but been busy with exams etc.) and I plan to play:
Schubert - Sonata in A D.664
Ravel - Sonatine
Ginastera - 3 Danzas Argentinas
I started learning the Ginastera and then found they were on the next diploma up syllabus, so i might change, perhaps. I'm learning rach 23-5 at the moment too, so possibly put that in somewhere, although as you see I've tried to play music from different "eras" as they like to say. I think they also are quite a nice combination. The other possibility would be perhaps some baroque, bach (but I only really like partita 2, italian concerto and french suite no.5) or even rameau - I really like his suite in A and it doesn't look too hard.
I think that the Debussy might seem a bit odd on it's own... although it is in the syllabus, and it is a fantastic piece.
You know, you're allowed 7 mins of whatever you want if it's not on the syllabus. So I think that is worth taking the oppertunity.
I think it's also worth considering something to link all your pieces - whatever you choose will be linked in some way, although it's nice for it to be pretty obvious.
And finally, I think Shostakovich goes nicely with beethoven... i don't know why. But they seem to sound similar, especially when the beethoven sounds humorous...
Working on: Schubert - Piano Sonata D.664, Ravel - Sonatine, Ginastera - Danzas Argentinas

I played the Ravel and Ginastera for an exam a month ago, and they go pretty well together; a LOT of contrasting moods, not too much fury, but it's still there.  Stick with the Danzas :P
