How much?
on: September 27, 2008, 02:29:37 PM
Random question, I know, but how much weight do you think you could lose in a week. Or what's the most weight you've ever lost in a week?

I lost 7 pounds last week, but i did cycle over 170 miles.

Normally i lose about 2 - 3 pounds.

No beer, no snacks, no fizzy drinks, lots of exercise.

That's really great!

For the first time last week - i finally just took a day off and went cycling for no reason.  typically, wait to the weekend.  For me, exercise is much better if done every day or two days - but i don't always have time.  And, i don't like to get up at 5 am.  Maybe that's what is the secret for getting in the exercise.  However, then you are sleep deprived.

OK.  Which is more important.  Exercise or sleep?

I lost 9 pounds since Saturday, by not eating as much, eating only yogurt for breakfast, and no sweets. And exercising a little bit.

What is lost quickly is often put back on even quicker. 9 pounds is rather extreme and breakfast is not really the meal to cut back on.

Anyway, i ain't going to lecture you as you have previously told me not to answer any of your posts and i am totally against diets for young girls.

I know, but...It's not like I'm anorexic. I'm not even close to that. I'm trying to get to my healthy weight. And I don't think being a skinny little person is healthy weight. The people that are like that are crazy.

And you can answer my posts, so long as you're not rude or mean. Sorry, about that, I was kind of in a bad mood when I wrote that.:(

Thankfully, you appear to be one of the more sensible youngsters.

There was a very interesting programme on the TV here in England about useless fad diets. A group of teenage girls were questioned about their weight/dress size and none of them were happy. Girls as young as 7 have been dieting and i blame stupid magazines aimed at young girls that persistently post pictures of disgusting stick insects like Victoria Beckham. There does seem to be a lot of pressure on young girls to be slim and i do find this worrying, especially when size zero twiglets are used as role models.

Incidently, whilst i am usually against diet aids, i must say that Hoodia has worked for me. Not sure if this is just the "placebo" effect.

Yes, I believe I am.

Those stick thin women are bad influences on young girls and teens. It's not healthy for either one. It is is nice for a girl to feel good about themselves when they're thinner but not so thin they look sick, although I think the world is obsessed with being thin. Some girls go a little too far...

I agree with you 100% Thal. Not only do these magazines target young girls with impossible role model body types, but also they even Photoshop the pictures to make the models thinner than they are as well as remove/hide skin imperfections.

What one sees in these magazines does not exist in real life.

If the publishers knew the devastating effect on body image of young girls that their magazines have, I wonder if they would change.

Probably not if there was a buck (or quid) to be made.

Sad really.

I do remember that the company i work for printed a catalogue for a well known adult services outlet.

Some of the things our designer was asked to do to the models cannot be mentioned on a public forum.

I think 9 lbs is too much... Try to eat more...
I lost 10lbs in one week before because I was depressed (last year). I didn't diet.
My friend told me that it was way too much and that it was bad for my health. Fortunately, my appetite came back. Don't try to lose so much weight in a week.
Besides, eating is enjoyable...

PS: different people have different body types... so it's only natural for others to be stick-thin or chubby-chubby... if you really want to know which kind of diet is best for you and your lifestyle, maybe you can consult a nutritionist/nurse in school (if you are still a student)

Most of the weight you lost is probably water weight.

So what exactly are you eating?  Are you hungry?  Will you be able to keep it up forever?  Most or all people that diet and lose weight rapidly will eventually gain it back, if not more.  It's because you can't keep up with that lifestyle forever.

Slow and steady is the way to go, and making little changes everyday.  I'd say a 2-3 lb loss per week is ok.  Any more than that, you're only setting yourself up for failure.

I'm not really hungry, my metabolism seems to have almost stopped. Mum and dad are thankful for that :P but is it healthy? Don't feel like eating and not losing any weight but not gaining any either.

OK:

1.Your body cannot eat up more than ~30 calories of fat per day per pound of fat.  Thus, any further caloric deficit eats up your muscles and lean body mass- which I assume you don't want to lose.  Therefore, do not make your caloric deficit any greater than this.

2. More protein proportion makes you fuller longer, gives you a higher metabolism, and promotes lean body mass and prevents catabolism of existing lean body mass.

3. Equal net calorie lifestyles where one is more active and the other sedentary are not equally healthful. IE, 2500 calories in and 3000 calories expended is much better for you than 1000 calories in and 1500 calories expended.  See g-flux articles (google it) for more details.

4. You don't need carbs at dinner: what are you going to do with them?  They're only used for energy.  General rule?  No carbs after 6 PM.

5. Do cardio in the mornings before breakfast. HIIT (google it) is the most effective.

6. Don't mix carbs and fats.  Have carb/protein meals and protein/fat meals.  Carbs cause insulin responses which encourage fat storage.

7. Watch your blood sugar levels.  The only time you want a spike is immediately PWO (post workout).  A rise in blood sugar causes an insulin surge, which then causes blood sugar to drop.  When it does drop, it will cause cravings for carbs.

So, for example: If i have 22 pounds of body fat, then 30*22=660.  Therefore, I literally can't lose more than 4600 fat calories a week, or about 1.3 pounds.

If I had 220 pounds of fat, then I could lose 13 pounds a week.
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

I can see why they'd be thankful...lol
With my two brothers and my dad, they eat us out of house and home. And my brothers are only almost 13 and 8.
If you're not eating, why wouldn't you be losing weight? But I guess that's probably good that you're not losing anything....

With a crash diet and lots of HIIT, I could probably lose 10-15 lbs and end up comatose.
Lol are you actually considering it though?
