A lot of work.

But what would you need to do it?

Certainly don't look at me. Takes probably 1 hours every 2-3(if your fast!) pages. I wonder how you would categorize the subjects in "Anything but piano"? Politics, Religion, Jokes+Fun, etc etc... That the most important step I guess next to the countless hours of repetition work. You can use Macros to help that though, get your computer to record certain keystrokes and mouse movements and then get it to repeat the actions. I use Apis Ceratina.

A lot of good things have been said, but we can narrow it down to what is also well written.  There are some very well written posts buried in here

Something simple that could give good results would just be for readers of the forum to dig up posts that stick out in their memory, chances are it would be worthwhile.

If people don't agree with what's worthwhile, we can offer up alternatives that might say the same thing better and reach an agreement.

(I'm thinking specifically piano stuff)

you would need a hell of a lot of time.

and I would imagine it extremely hard to index the anything but piano forum.

Especially when more than 1 subject get's rolled into the same thread -
Politics, religion
Jokes, religion
Pianostreet, religion
society, religion

Blood, sweat and tears.

Just kidding.

Good old manpower. Many heads and hands. Maybe 3-5 people for one board. At least 1 of them a member ever since the beginning. Never mind the anything but board, except for the most popular threads (pictures, what ifs, spa??)

btw Bob, I saw "Bob's thread" some time ago, and I think it's a swell idea. Aside from a "master index". Little threads for the sake of links and ideas, not necessarily for everyone.
