What is your favorite Schubert/Liszt transcription?
on: October 11, 2008, 01:37:46 AM
Hi there,

Ten years ago, i was lucky enough to ear Vladimir Viardo playing this Schubert/Liszt transcription as an encore of the Rach 3. I finaly got the score and prepared it in a few weeks to do this little tribute to Schubert and Liszt.

This is my favourite Schubert/Liszt Transcription, please share your own Schubert/Liszt Transcription so i can get to know more of them.

Have fun!!

Kissin recorded a few of the song transcriptions along with the Wanderer Fantasy. They are played with great assurance & appropriate emotion. Available on the DG label as CD & possibly DVD. He also recorded a scary Erlkonig on a Sony CD.
The Serenade you posted seems slightly slow for my taste, but is a good example of Schubert's Viennese idiom.

I played die junge nonna which is an amazing song in the first place, but works well as a transcription.  It has some extremley awkward writing though.
There's a transcription of a song with shakespeare text about a postman I think (not from schwanengesang) which looks fun.
Lazar Berman included quite a few in his recital with the Scraibin fantasy, Rach moment musicales etc.
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.
