Anybody Have Elliott Carter's Phone Number???
on: October 16, 2008, 08:23:51 PM
I'll be in NYC for a week and I'd like to get him drunk and talk with him about his music.  Maybe even gossip about ahinton with him.  Whatever.  These guys are my heroes.

Anyone got his NYC number?

If you see him, can you please ask for the score of that sonata that sounds like someone typing a letter.

I'm not sure which of Carter's sonatas you are referring to here but I suspect that you may be thinking about his piano sonata (albeit not from the way you write about it); typing a six-letter letter, perhaps (if you allow for considerable prescience - and if you don't get that, then look it up), but Carter's piano sonata is a fine work, wholly individual in character and offering ample evidence of a composer with an unusual mind in the early stages of its development - it's not the easiest of pieces to bring off well and I have to confess still to be waiting for a really good performance of it, but it is an expressive and moving piece far from any sense of mere typing (unless in the wrong pianist's hands).

Rather than dwelling on typos, you'd be far better off "looking up" a score of Elliott Carter's piano sonata and perhaps going through it at the piano...

Looking at it now, but i only have the revised 1982 edition.

Think i will give it a miss.

Question for you...

Name two English composers who changed their name?

That's the one I don't have - I only have the original Mercury publication (must also get the one that you have). It's surely interesting that he thought to revise the work so much later in life...

Think i will give it a miss.
If you must - we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one, it seems...

Too tired to think of this right now. I'm sure you must have the answer, though! Are either of them 19th-century ones? (I'd suspect at least one of them to be so, given your particular interest in that era). Shouldn't "name" read "names", to the extent that these composers presumably didn't share the same name to begin with?...

One is 20th Century which of course you know, and the other is 19th Century which i only found out last week to my complete astonishment.

Shouldn't that be "answers"? - you refer to not one but to composers, after all. If ever there were a disincentive to post even one correct answer to anything, this is it! - even separately, these are pretty sickening prizes to contemplate, but together they'd be just beyond bearable; accordingly, I somehow suspect that K may not be the first to come up with either right answer that you're looking for...

The latter, of course, you silly fellow; I led you right into that one, did I not?! (and quite deliberately, too), yet not far enough, it would seem, to the extent that you've nevertheless rather disappointed me in your lack of reference to split infinitives. The sense still stands, though, methinks...

I couldn't possibly comment.

And I have no doubt that Elliott Caarter (remember him? - he's the subject of this thread, as it happens) is one such.

Sweet dreams.
And to you - and perhaps yours might even include giving a great performance of the Carter piano sonata...

I assume one is Peter Warlock (aka Philip Heseltine). Don't know offhand who the other is, though.

I, possibly, may be confused, but you, definitely, are in error.  You should have written "a picnic short a sandwich," and not the other way around.

Possibly Birtwistle (aka Factorywistle)?  Dunno. I'm kinda guessing.

Actually, you'll find I said it correctly. Maybe in your country they say things back-to-front, but the original saying is: "A sandwich short of a picnic."

Extra chocolate or no extra chocolate, what's this to do with Elliott Carter, who has undoubtedly not changed his name? (Thal should perhaps answer this, since he raised it).

But I have, dear fellow, I have; not quite all go off-topic, but in this instance it might be argued that Thal's diversion in this one merited a separate thread of its own rather than interrupting this one.

"There must me"? Sounds abit like a kind of perverse offshoot of the "Muβ es sein? - es muβ sein!" of Beethoven's Op. 135 quartet. Anyway, without trying to undermine the nature of your distraction here but at the same time trying to encourage you to stay on topic, how about your seeking responses about composers who have changed their phone numbers?...
