Choosing a romantic piece
on: October 26, 2008, 10:14:27 AM
My teacher has given me the chance to do an special piece. So, I did a list of all the pieces I want to play, and my teacher has chosen three of it. I have to choose which one to play.

The doubt is between:
-Chopin's Polonaise Militar (op. 40/1)
-Brahms' Rhapsody op. 79/1
-Chopin's second Scherzo.

I will play the piece I chose in a recital next year. But I have to start practicing it. I prefer playing the scherzo, but maybe it's too difficult... What do you think?

To see what's my level:

-I've played: Mozart's sonata k330, clair de lune (debussy), albeniz's cataluña (from Spanish suite), Chopin's Nocturne posthumous in C# minor, Bach's Prelude and Fugue II in C minor (WTC I).

-I'm playing: Beethoven's Sonata 7 (op. 10/3), Bach's Prelude and Fugue 14 in F# minor (WTC II), Liszt's Valse Oubliée 1, Brahm's Rhapsody op. 79/2, Albeniz's Castilla (from Spanish suite), Moszkowski etudes (2, 9), Czerny op. 740/33.

Thank you in advance.

One of the very rare occasions where i would suggest Brahms.

The "Military" polonaise is horrid beyond description and the Scherzo has been played by every pianist in the Universe (which is of course not a reason for you not to play it should you wish).

I have not played either of the Rhapsodies for years, but if memory serves the 1st is more difficult than the 2nd that you are already learning. So why not learn both?

The Chopin Scherzo is only really difficult if you play it like Ashkenazy.

Good luck

I agree with Thal
I too would recomend the Brahms (probably because of my personal vendetta against Chopin ;))
