SCRIABIN
on: October 31, 2008, 09:47:52 PM
I just bought a cd performed by Yevgeny Sudbin and he plays Scriabin very well. Does anyone know more about Scriabin? He was an incredible composer for the piano. I am surprised there is so few artists playing his music.

A pretty good pianist, juilliard graduate, and he studied Scriabin a lot!

If he is so good why doesn't he record anything? I heard him on youtube and Sudbin is much better.

I have been unaware of Scriabin's music until recently.  Wow, it's amazing.  You need to hear Sofronitsky play Scriabin.  He's incredible.  You can go to YouTube to find a number of Scriabin by Sofronitsky selections.  There are even some Scriabin pieces played by Scriabin himself.  Scriabin's Prelude Op. 11 no. 8 is played two very different ways by Rachmaninoff and Sofronitsky.  They are both wonderful.

Scriabin wouldn't be happy to hear you say that!
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

I love Scriabin, and he is not that difficult to play, at least there are pieces that one can play easily.
His music resembles the human speach sometimes...

Why not? Scriabin and Rachmaninoff were not the enemies, they gave the recitals together, and after Scriabin's death Rachmaninoff gave few concerts and all the money that were raised from that gave to Scriabin's wife.  ::)

Whenever I think of Scriabin I think "Music Mystic". He did treat his music very religiously.

Try Scriabin's etude Op 2 No 1.  The notes are not difficult, though making them musical is.

For an adrenaline rush, go to Youtube and listen to Horowitz's Carnegie Hall performance of Scriabin's Etude Op 8 No 12.  The man must have been possessed by demons.

Also, listen to Horowitz perform Vers la Flamme - also on Youtube.  Glorious.

If you go to www.kalw.org at 9pm Pacific Time on Monday Nov. 17 you can hear a lecture/recital on late Scriabin and Prokofiev by Robert Greenberg and Garrick Ohlsson - an excellent program and performance.

Like Chopin, Scriabin wrote peices that only a very good pianists can play, but he also wrote many peices that can be played by intermediate players, its not all hard stuff. Alot of his Preludes are very managable!!! check them out. i think many are around grade 5-6 not 100% sure though, never played them, i think the only Scriabin i've played is his D#Minor Etude which was great fun :D
