Rememberance Day: 11th November
on: November 10, 2008, 08:44:06 PM
Tomorrow marks the 90th Anniversary since the end of World War 1. We will commermorate those who have lost their lives fighting for their country, freedom and their families.

Although it is mainly surrounding WW1, it also remembers those who have fell in Iraq, Afganistan and other war-torn places. It allows us to sympathise with those who have had their families destroyed by war.

In Britain, we also use poppies (I don't know if this is in other countries) as a sign of rememberance and also a 2 minute silence at 11:00 am.

What are your thoughts on this? Has your family been affected by war? Will you remember those fighters tomorrow? How does your country respond to events like this?

I have responded to this in the "Poppy Day" thread and, however inadequate my response there may be, it's the best that I can come up with on this subject right now,.

Best,

Yes, I read it...I disagree with you, as I have also mentioned in the other thread.

It mainly surrounds the World Wars. By President I assume the failing George Bush? But that is for another time: this is the Rememberance discussion.

We also use poppies sometimes. We have a special ceremony for the Australian troops as well (last post, laying of wreaths etc).

Yes, we always have the poppies. Ceremonies also include some prayers sometimes, laying wreaths and old pictures of lost soldiers. Then the two minutes silence. Most of them are around war memorials/statues (there are many of these in Britain).

In London (capital of England), the Royal Family will attend also. Obviously, the public are not allowed at that one, only the important people. However, it is shown on the T.V.

Dont you think its rather disturbing to talk current killing in Iraq 'okay' because the Allied liberated Holland 60 years ago?
If you want to use history as an excuse, i could say that the Americans had to rescue us during ww2 because Holland funded the American civil wars.

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
