Crochets vs. Quarters

Is this right?

breve = whole
semibreve = half
crochet = quarter
quaver = eigth
semiquaver = sixteenth

I'm wondering this because everyone on this board seems to use the non-American note duration which I have never heard of before reading these forums.  And when I looked up the word "soupir" in a French-English dictionary, it provides the definition: sigh; in music crochet (Am. quarter) rest.

Corrections:

Whole = semibreve
half = minim

The rest are right.  "Breve" now refers to the double whole note, which is rarely seen.

The use of non-American terms confused me at first, too.  Most of the books and websites I've seen seem to use them, despite the fact that they're silly and make no sense.

Erm...  quasi-hemi-demi-semi-quaver?!   For once, the Empirial system of MPH is superior to the rest of the world of KPH!  US System: 128th note.  Everyone else: They can go twist their tongues!
