Scherzo or ballade?
on: December 08, 2008, 03:22:41 PM
My teacher has given me the chance to play a difficult Chopin piece, and I've thought to play a scherzo or a ballade, but I don't know what of them would be aproppiate to my repertoire.

To see my level, I'm playing:

-Bach's second English suite in A minor.
-Beethoven's sonata 27 op. 90.
-Schumann's Papillons.

And, if there is another Chopin piece that would fit well in my repertoire, I accept suggestions. Thank you in advance!

Either any of his 3 first scherzi, och any of his 3 first ballades...What I've heard they're kind of the same difficulty

Is it just me, or did he ask which ballade or scherzo to play?

I agree with pianisten1989...it is up to your liking, but maybe it is not the best idea to start with the fourth ballade or fourth scherzo.

yes but he also said that if there were any other pieces by Chopin that would fit his repertoire he would accept the suggestion

I would choose a Scherzo. But i love the 1st ballade in Gminor. Plenty of varied passages in that one.

I would pick scherzo 1. It's by no means easy, but the structure is repetitive so that once you have mastered a few key passages, you're essentially done with it. It's probably the quickest to learn and will be of great effect if you can master the end.
