Is your heading a typo or are you displaying your 7th grade wit by denigrating one of the great musical minds?

7th grade wit is applicable for a 7th grade composer.

This man seems to have been 99 for ages, so i congratulate him on reaching his Century and wish him a very happy birthday.

Thal - thank you for your decency in making reference to this event - and absolutely no thanks to you at all for your utterly crass way of doing so here, which is unworthy even of you at your worst. If you have any respect for anyone at all, please amend your thread title and do what's necessary.

Best,

Alistair

On a far more respectful note, here is an interview conducted yesterday by Charlie Rose, and includes James Levine and Daniel Barenboim:

You need to change the very first one, in order to change all of them. I think...LOL

I was looking up the students of Nadia Boulanger and saw Carter was one of them, and I was really impressed by all the names in the list of her students. Don´t know much about Carter yet, except he´s 100 years old.

If anyone (else) tires of the stupid word-play going on here, I'd recommend taking a listen to the webcast:

https://www.wnyc.org/shows/eveningmusic/episodes/2008/12/11

This evening (Eastern time) they are playing a whole load of Carter pieces, including some recent stuff. Right now they're talking about Carter's influences and they just played some nice Boulanger piece in honor of his great teacher.

Neither I nor, I imagine, anyone else here even knew that you were a 7th grade composer (whatever that may be)...

This man seems to have been 99 for ages,
Does he? Well, let me assure you that he has been 99 for exactly the same amount of time as any other centenarian.

so i congratulate him on reaching his Century and wish him a very happy birthday.
Well, that's (finally) very gracious of you. He has, incidentally, admitted that he's been somewhat less productive in the past year or so as he has had to spend rather more time than usual in talking about himself and his work, but he seems to be suggesting that normal service will now be resumed...

Best,

Alistair

Now he can write 100+  :)

If one rejects his current works, surely they cannot reject his entire output. He's covered so much ground! I have a bit of a fascination with his complex, musically inaccessible, mathematically accessible worlds. It's like seeing the dark side of the moon.

:D (And he can do a back flip!)

Any chance of changing this topic to the above, which would surely be rather more appropriate than some of the efforts here so far?..

Why?

Then there would be 2 threads with the same title.

90+ was a piece Carter wrote in 1994 in dedication of Italian composer Goffredo Petrassi's 90th birthday. Carter was 86 then. I'd personally love to see him write some more string quartet music. I just heard the new Clarinet Quintet (written in 2007) on that radio program last night and it was fantastic. His quartet works always get so much out of the players and their instruments (especially in works like String Quartet 5). By the same token, I can't help but marvel at his willingness to push himself into challenging settings at his advanced age. One of his most recent works is a flute concerto that, for many years, he was reluctant to work on because he didn't think the flute would work well with his type of music. It's inspiring that he's willing to keep progressing with the same forward stride into unsure territory that he kept so well during the past several decades.

I'm not really up to speed on the academic Carter criticism from the past 2 decades, but I'm certainly curious to find out more.

I've got to get my sleep. I'll be in NYC to hear Carter's music tomorrow and see a live interview of the composer himself. I saw/heard Charles Wuorinen's 2nd Piano Quintet (2008) earlier this evening in Princeton and was utterly floored by how strong the music sounded. Tomorrow is sure to be exceptional as well.

I did not know that; thanks for clearing it up. I guess it then could be appropriate if Pierre Boulez wrote 100+  :) (but I think he's again been busy continuing his orchestral explosions of the old piano set Notations which really, really excites me!)
