Getting to know you...
on: December 14, 2008, 08:13:26 PM
When I arrive a few hours before a performance, I have to make friends with the piano.  And it takes a slow approach.  Nothing fast.  EVER. Just a slow getting-to-know-you sort of thing.  And there are times when it's like love at first sight.  It responds to every thing I want to do.  It's almost an automatic thing.  The other night there was a rather old yamaha.  I thought "oh-oh, it's going to be a bumpy ride tonight".  But it turned out to be one of the most responsive and sensitive pianos I'd ever played.  Then there are those times when there's a glass wall seperating us.  Usually because there's no resistance to the touch and everything sounds loud and harsh.  I know we can't afford to carry our pianos around with us, like Richter and Michelangeli did, so what is one to do?  The difference in instruments is SOOOOOOOOO immense.  But, like my teacher said, it's like horse-back riding.  You've got to take what you find.

A VST piano sample, a portable keyboard, a computer and then a technician to work it out for you  :D
