New starters advice please!
on: December 23, 2008, 05:58:31 PM
Hey guys,

I hope this forum can prove useful as I look for some advice to get me started. For years I have always wanted to learn how to play the piano, when i see talented musicans play I always think how cool they look! No other instrument really appeals to me at all.

I have absolutely zero knowledge of music to be honest regarding theory etc. I played the recorder when I was about 10...im 25 now, and we have always had a keyboard which i dabbled with, but other than that I wouldnt consider myself musically minded at all. I havent touched a keyboard for over 10 years.

Basically Im looking for any tips, advice etc than anyone can offer as i begin my quest to learn the piano- obviously i need lessons etc but any basic advice on how/who to look for what to avoid etc. Without sounding like a bighead, I have always excelled in my previous hobbies, im a scratch golfer and have played for my country- so I know how incredibly frustrating I am going to find being so awful at the piano, and how diffilcult it will be be to start something from scratch, especially at 25 because obviously its different when you start as a child.

Do you guys think there are any indicators that would suggest I may or may not have the aptitude to be any good? I know with golf for example you can practice as much as you want, but to really progress you must understand so much about the game and obviously people plateau at different levels. I have always had good hand and eye coordination when it comes to sport, would this be of any use with the piano?

Thanks in advance for your help, any comments are welcome. I know it sounds stupid, but as much as im looking forward to starting, i wish i wasnt starting at the bottom, i know if i put my mind to it i can progress nicely, so anyway you guys feel i could assist my progression would be much appreciated.

Try to listen more piano classical songs. Eg like Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, etc.

I dunno if golf could have some advantages on piano.. But i dont think so.

Just get a Grade 1 book to start with.

I would expect your golf training to give you some advantages in the physical actions in learning the piano.  You have already leanrt how to blanace, how to be aware of momentum and physical movements, probably how to physically carry through a rhythm - all this is a guess though as I don't know much about golf.  Piano is an intelelctual and a physical pursuit.
