My favorite band director is Allan Dempke of the Allentown band...because he makes it look like he's not working and he always adds his own 'signature' by interpreting the music his own way.

My favorite orchestral/symphony conductor would be Loren Maazel (spelling?) and also a few others.  When it comes to this type of conducting, I'm  not sure what I'm looking for but i suppose it would be to not let things become too 'loose.'  Like flying a jet and having a coffee break at a really important place in the music.

Lorin Maazel...spelling is incorrect. Quite famous, apparently:

ever i would say Leopold Stokowski of the Philadelphia Orchestra because of his free hand technique and for alive Valery Gergiev of the Kirov Orchestra because of his understanding of the music.

Oh.  Good choice!  Gergiev is young, too, isn't he?!  I think I saw him conducting the other day on tv and thoroughly enjoyed it.  And, yes - Stokowski's conducting was amazing - you can hear it on recordings.

And quite overrated according to a lot of people!  After the reviews of his Mahler cycle, I was expecting a lot more of his Prokofiev and didn't get it!

He's a bit more than 'quite famous'!
