Pieces with big left hand leaps
on: December 29, 2008, 10:26:25 AM
I need a piece with big LH leaps.  Nothing too long.  Can be from any period, but preferably modern.

Off the top of my head...Shostakovich's Concerto for piano, trumpet, and strings has a famous passage near the end. Chopin's etude op. 25 no. 4 (if that's not right, I mean the A minor), and lots of Scriabin (I like op. 65 no. 3). You know this is such a common thing, it makes it a broad issue!

Scriabin also wrote an etude in a random opus I think it's 56?  It's either a single piece or from a set of pieces; it's only two pages long but the left hand has some crazy huge chords.  Sounds kinda mysterious too :P

I second the Op 65 #3, left hand is a bit similar to the other one I mentioned but the piece is definately much tougher.
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

Perfectly- a great piece which I learnt - Rag infernal by William Bolcom-  a pain in the arse to learn, but short and effective.
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

Rhapsody In Blue.  Too long, though.

Not modern, I'm afraid, but certainly has a fair amount of left hand leaping - Fumagalli Casta diva transcription for left hand. Left hand constantly jumping between registers trying to create the effect of a two hand texture. About 6 mins long, and an interesting test of left hand technique. I must admit to being quite taken with the piece.

I detest big left hand leaps.

To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31.
