Alkan's works - im new to them
on: December 30, 2008, 07:27:59 AM
I'm knew to the world of alkan and his contemporaries, much of what Hamelin plays i find very interesting (from what i've seen, which isnt much) could you learned folk throw some pieces that you prefer my way by either Alkan or other like composers Hamelin chooses to play.

Thanks

I would do a search on Alkan for relevant threads.

As for Alkan's contemporaries: Chopin and Liszt are the two most famous.

Look up the Symphony (rather confusingly, it is in fact Studies 4-7 of the 12 Studies in Minor Keys Op.39). It's not too horrendous to play, by Alkan standards, and it's a good introduction to his general style. The rest of Op.39 is very wonderful too.....

Alkan is out of print and you'll find plenty of his stuff legitimately available for download at imslp.org

yeah i love that site. has everything.

so far the only thing of alkan i've heard...and love. is the allegro barbaro. jack gibbons plays it amazingly. OH and i heard the piano symphony or w/e, bits of it played by hamelin. very good stuff. its a shame he's neglected.

It's actually a very fine piece of music, perhaps not to everyone's taste, but it SHOULD sound like this:

Most of the people  loved alkan after discovered him

i think op.39 is the most impressive one

and there are some other like:
op.27 - le chemin de fer ( a piece about train,fun isn't it. )
op.65 no 6 - Barcarolle ....etc
were very good too ;).

Then I think you better have your blood sugar levels tested.  Something's clearly wrong, and it's not Alkan.
