Favourite pieces that DON'T involve piano...!!
on: June 05, 2004, 11:56:25 PM
Just curious as to what other pieces people love that don't include piano, to start with mine include Beethoven symphonies and Bach solo violin sonatas and partitas. Oh and what other instruments do people play other than piano, I kinda play the violin a bit. :)

I sing and I love Beethoven's symphonies. I love listen to Baroque vocal music and German Lieder. Of course, that involes a piano to accompany the vocalist, but I still think it counts!

I love Beethoven...

He is the best EVER!!!!!!!!!!

...Sorry....anyways I like his cello sonatas and his violin sonatas, especially the 'kreutzer' (sp?) sonata. So much emotion...

I'm a fan of most of Mozart's symphonies and his string quartets and other chamber music.  I also love hearing showy, virtuosic pieces for the violin.

My very favorite pieces, though, are anything by J. S. Bach, especially the B-minor mass.  What an amazing piece.

I used to play the violin and viola, but I haven't in a while.  It wasn't my thing.  I also sing a bit, much to the horror of family and friends.

Which one? No.2 - the one with the bell in the third movement, or the first.  I haven't listened to 3 or 4 yet.

I am absolutely IN LOVE with Bach's Cello Suites. *drool* That's really all that comes to mind currently, but it's also 6:23 in the morning. I also play flute, and I want to take up guitar this year.

Handel's Messiah remains one of my all-time favorites.

I could listen to Bach's Violin Concertos for a LONG time before they got old.  As a matter of fact, I'm still waiting for them to get old...  Perlman has a wonderful recording on EMI, I believe.

oh, there are way too many!  i could claim half of janice's list for my own, too.

bach 'cello suites.  i'm in love with the rostropovich recording.

beethoven late quartets.  i have many many different versions, but prefer the budapest quartet.

mozart's requiem
the magic flute, marriage of figaro, string quintets, clarinet quintet

schubert chamber music:  "the trout quintet" "death and the maiden"  "the shepherd on the rock" trio for horn, mezzo, and piano.  the octet.

mendelssohn trio, italian symphony

brahms symphonies, especially... well all of them!  karl bohm is my favorite conductor for these.

i'm just getting more into opera, but i really enjoy carmen and tosca.  love those drama queens!   i like placido domingo--a great muscian.

but i do listen to piano works more than just about anything else.  i guess that is a different thread...

Interesting to see a lot of people like the bach unaccompanied sonatas and suites. I also really love Mahlers' symphonies and really I guess anything by Debussy, especially La mer and the second book of images.

I'm a fan of Schumann symphones (especially 3 & 4).  I'm in the process of transcribing the D minor to solo piano, but I'm getting nowhere without the score, lol.  I need to buy that.

Smetana's orchestral works are hidden gems, especially Moldau.

Schumann's A minor cello concerto.

Mendelssohn's E minor violin concerto.

Beethoven's late string quartets. (!)

mahler - the 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Ah yes Mahler's symphonies
Sibelius

I am a singer as well.  I drive around listening to the Swingle Singers cd's singiing all the parts of Mozart and Bach.
I got  a great interface, mike and software for Christmas, and the first piece I recorded  my voice doing all the parts was "Kyrie" by Hugo Hammarstrom... absolute heaven.

My first instrument was trumpet... kid lessons at public school.  Never learned to play well but still love the instrument.
Hey I grew up in the sixties and yah know, of course I played guitar a little.  One semester of clarinet, one semester of viola and college.  yeah... no, I don't really play them.
