Looking for Kapustin's Toccatina
on: January 17, 2009, 07:50:32 PM
LOVE this piece and want to play it. Also any other of his shorter works would be wonderful! Question though: Would this count as a 20th century piece on a competition program?

As far as I know, Kapustin is still alive, so I am thinking that his music may be under copyright.

Let me specify: I want the Op. 40 No. 3, not the op. 36.

Buy it. MusT, Zen-On, Prhythm and his other publishers desperately need the money to keep publishing his great music.

I'm actually working on this piece right now for a twentieth-century competition piece--kapustin is well and alive, so this will be fine. Actually, one (or some) of the competitors of the Van Cliburn Amatuer competition used the Concert Jazz Etudes, I think. Look on youtube for Leif Ove Andsnes performance of it, and have fun learning this amazing piece!

Andsnes hasn't played any Kapustin as far as I know, and a quick YouTube search came up with nothing, further affirming that he doesn't play any.

Giuseppe Andaloro was the pianist I meant-- sorry. His Toccatina Performance is simply stunning-- in the fast way! Hamelin plays it a touch slower, which I think is great because there's more expression; but, since his Toccatina isn't on youtube (as far as I'm aware), this has been the best I've come up with. Enjoy  :)
