Recommendations for Russian folk/gypsy songs.
on: January 19, 2009, 11:18:37 AM
I absolutely adore Russian/Eastern European songs (especially folk, and gypsy types), and am looking for more to learn. Would anyone mind offering some recommendations?

Some that I'm already familiar with that immediately come to mind are Brahms' Hungarian Dances (esp. no. 5), Liszt Hungarian Rhapsodies (esp. no. 2+15), Tchaikovsky's folk dances, Khachaturian's Sabre Dance, Monti's Czardas, and my very, very favorite..."Ochi tchorniye".

My favourite would be Sarasate.

Although written for the violin, some have been transcribed for piano and are rather nice.

When i get home, i will sort out some sheets for you.

Bartok's 6 Roumanian Dances are quite distinctive. They are arranged for various instrument combinations including solo piano.

Harry Janos Suite by Kodaly is amazing!
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

You do realize, that Bartok is not Russian nor 'Eastern' in that way.LOL.
Whatever. His piano pieces are mostly in the genre, also mentioned before, Kodály, but he wrote chorus pieces mostly, and you could try Weiner Leó, Haydn's Hungarian works, Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies, one of Brahms's best friend was Reményi Ede, also composer.
Erkel Ferenc wrote big epic orchestral stuff, but also within the style, which is called verbunkos by the way, and gipsy music is called cigányzene in Hungarian if it helps in the search.
Good luck!
