Chopin-expert
on: January 21, 2009, 10:15:11 PM
I am a 20 years old pianist and a big Chopin "fan" who would really like to take lessions with a professor who has specialised on this music. Could anyone possibly tell me some names and where they are teaching? I guess there should be people at the Chopin Academy in Warshaw, but I don't know anyone. Would be mostly grateful for any info!

By the way you describe things I doubt you have the level to study with big name teachers like that ... Any decent teacher can help you with Chopin really...

The human nature is funny, really. I came here to ask for help and information and not to be looked down on by people who have no idea about me or my playing. Making conclusions abuot my playing after reading two lines really says more about you than me...If I was writing heartbreaking frases, would you think different or what..? Anyway, trust me, I am a good musician, entered conservatory when I was 16, have several competitions and prizes behind, do know how to play the piano, have a strong personal relationship to the music of Chopin and want to specialize on it. So I need a professor who can tell me something about the real tradition, correct pedalings, correct rythm in the mazurkas, so on. If I did not have the level, I wouldn't be wanting to do all this and asking for information in this forum.

I wish you the best in finding an instructor.  Chopin is a great composer.  I am learning his Etudes now.  Wonderful sounds and good finger exercises!  Keep up your quest in learning your music and Chopin.   :)

Any competent pianist/professor of piano has studied Chopin in considerable breadth and detail.  His technique is so much a part of our approach to piano, as is his cantabile, poetry, harmony, color, etc.

You might look to see what your prospective instructor has recorded in order to know his/her specialties - generally, it is a clue if he/she has recorded the complete works  ;).  From which country do you come, and where do you prefer to study?

Maya, where in the world are you?  You might contact Nelson Freire, who I believe now lives in Paris, or Ivan Davis (Google him for his website), who recently retired as Artist in Residence at the University of Miami.  He knows everyone and could make solid recommendations.

I could certainly suggest Roger Woodard, a leading exponent of Chopin's music and the "serious" study behind it. https://www.rogerwoodward.com/

Fine.  Duly noted and recorded.  Your gastrointestinal problems are a private (and highly boring) subject between you and your physician.  Spare the rest of us.

If you read this, m1469, that means that nobody on this piano-street did chase you away.   Hello again !
Of course, where is your epicenter, which region are you in ?
In France, I think that Jean-Marc Luisada could advise you.  He is a "Chopin"-man and a music-teacher.  Here is a link to his website where you can contact him.

Good luck.
