Repertiore for 2009, too easy?
on: January 27, 2009, 12:08:13 PM
Hello People!

Given that this is my second year learning piano, and i have a total of 29 pieces under my belt (mostly small pieces, but still 29 :P)

i have decided that i would like to get to 60 by the end of the year, however the list i came up with...well... im not sure if this might be just a tad too easy?

what im trying to say is, would these pieces be good for my second year of learning or should i be learning some more difficult pieces?

6 Mozart Minuets
3 Beethoven Sonatinas
2 Beethoven Minuets
2 Beethoven Bagatelles
5 Burgmuller Pieces
3 Clementi Sonatinas
4 Moszkowski Etudes - Op.91
2 Bach Inventions
4 Scarlatti Sonatas

Why so many of each?  Why so much classical?  Have you considered a Chopin prélude or nocturne, a Debussy prélude, a Schubert impromptu, a Prokofiev sarcasm...?

Perhaps you could determine your rep as it comes, and as it interests you, with the predetermined guidelines so that you make sure, as it appears you wish, to play sufficient classical and polyphonic works.  For me, but perhaps not for you, I find it motivating at first, but eventually limiting, to have decided the year's repertoire in advance...

Yes, I agree with michael_langlois. You need to diversify your repertoire a bit. Maybe , 3 or 4 pieces per each period plus the etudes.

i thought that was diverse..?

i plan on playing chopin next year, being my favourite composer i really want to have the technique necessary to play his works and right now i dont feel ready.

michael, you said a schubert impromptu, which one were you thinking? imo i thought they were all pretty difficult.

by the way, i havnt decided on which piece i shall play, it would be "a" beethoven sonatina, i will choose the one that suits me at the time i get up to it, so im not really pre-determining which one im going to play, and it wont necssesarily be in that order.

Ab Minor, perhaps?  If I were you, I would have a listen and a look through the score to see which appeals to you and which one feels most comfortable (or a reasonable stretch).

Well, diverse in terms of musical periods. Like what michael said, your program has a lot of classical stuff. I'm not saying playing all classical period pieces is bad, but it's good to have some things from other periods. I would suggest, if you want to, the Mikrokosmos by Bartok for your 20thC pieces..

i dont really like 20th century music, i love debussy/racmaninoff but i still somewhat consider them 19th century composers.. does that make sense?

i was leaning towards schuberts impromptu no.2 in e-flat, just to have 1 big piece amongst the little ones but the b minor section worries me a little.

Oh, okay. Well 20th century music is quite hard to getting used to. I understand. All the best in your endeavors.

Thankyou  :D

Musical periods aside, does anyone else think that the above is slightly..."playing it safe" and not really pushing any technical aspects?

If you've played 29 pieces, I think you're up for learning some of that Chopin right now. And some sonatas. Do a lot of listening for other composers, and pick pieces you like, 'cause I'm not sure if you truly like everything on your list. Other than that, I like the idea.

Edit:
I checked out the Moszkowski, and they look interesting. thanks for the idea. I'm going to look for these pieces and show some to my teacher.
I'm sinking like a stone in the sea,
I'm burning like a bridge for your body
