superstitious pianists!
on: June 07, 2004, 03:41:16 PM
Hey everyone I was just wondering what funny, interesting, or just plain odd superstitions people on this forum have? I for one always play with my mobile phone (switched off!) in my pocket and I always put my glasses on the piano before I play. Oh and I used to have a lucky pair of shoes...before they fell apart!

Common superstitions of pianists:
- That it's possible to play "with fingers only"
- That it's good or necessary to have certain feelings (angry, sad,...) to play a piece well
- That in the fingers there are muscles
- That for gaining technique, you have to "strengthen" the muscles
- That it's possible to play "just the notes" and add the expression later (something unthinkable for wind or string players!)
- That your technique is good if you can put a dime on the back of your hand and it doesn't fall down
Best Wishes,

Is it just me or is Monk starting to sound like Bernhard?

Hi Rondo,
long before I joined the Piano Forum I used to write "Best Wishes". E.G., search the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Forum for older posts by me.
And it's pure coincidence that my views are often similar to Bernhard's.
Best Wishes,
Monk

OMG! Monk is Bernhard! Like Janice and Ayahav are Comme le Vent.
I wonder who Faulty Damper's double is?

O.K.
I tell the truth.
All persons here in the forum are THE SAME person.
A frustrated piano teacher with no students who is bored and invents a whole universe of pianists. SIGH!
But wasn't that clear from the beginning? Who else would post something regarding such a totally boring subject?
Best Wishes,
John Smith from West Virginia

I don't think I have any superstitions in either life or music, but I do have plenty of odd habits. Aside from in midwinter I like to play barefoot, and preferably in shorts. Once when I stayed in the Manila Playboy Club (there was a nice grand in the foyer) I came close to being in trouble with those little blue military men with guns. Shorts and bare feet are not a sign of a well dressed pianist in the Philippines. Fortunately I was a lot fitter than they were and running up nineteen flights of stairs puffed them. Was a bit dicey for a while though.
