Internet Pianists
on: February 05, 2009, 09:27:56 PM
This article is hilarious. I can see the similarities between categories of photographers and pianists. I think there are many internet pianists (level 0 pianists) in this forum. Those who are just good in talking about piano.

Yes. Amusing list.

I think I see your point nyonyo. I've lost track of how many "new" threads have been initiated on this forum where people agonize about what the "best" piano is. Underneath much of the discussion seems to lurk the eroneous assumption that a more expensive piano will somehow make them a better pianist. While a good instrument may inspire, it will never create an artist--that has to be there from the get-go. Much like your camera example, there are those who can read up on and talk endlessly about the technical aspects of a piano but in the final analysis, one is left with the impression that, upon playing the instrument, they wouldn't really feel confident choosing one over the other if they didn't know the reputation, price, or (more importantly to them) others' opinions ahead of time. In the end, a really good artist is able to get better results from a digital (or for that matter, even an upright) than less talented could ever get on the longest, most glitzy and expensive grand on the market. Perhaps it's a matter of priorities.

The internet is a very cynical place

I think it's generally true that the more it costs, the better. Exception, of course. But if you have a good instrument, you aren't held back by it.
