Excuse my utter cluelessness...piano location
on: February 10, 2009, 03:24:20 PM
Hi - I just got my piano in September.  It has been in my family since the 1940's, but not played since the mid 1980's, when I stopped taking lessons after 7 years.  It's been a piece of furniture at my father's house all this time and I FINALLY got him to give it to me when he retired and moved to Florida.

The set up of my home doesn't have many choices for the placement of the piano.  The wall I originally intended to use for it is an inside wall, because I know the outside walls are bad for keeping it in tune.  But when I measured the space, I saw that the instrument would cover one of the doors of the little crawl space closet under my stairs and I was forced to put it in the living room against an outside wall.  Next to a window.

I had it tuned shortly after I got it and it sounded pretty nice, but quickly started sounding out of tune again.  Especially after coming home from my instructor's house and playing his baby grand.  Talk about jealous!

This weekend I decided I didn't care about the door to the crawl space cupboard and moved the piano to the inside wall in the other room.  Now the piano sounds fantastic!  I haven't had it retuned yet, but I can't believe the difference!   Does putting it against an outside wall also cause the sound to flatten?  Is it going outside for the neighbors to enjoy instead of myself?  If so...I hope they weren't listening too closely while I was just learning my last section of Mozart's Sonata 331!

It was actually in a corner, against 2 outside walls, with a window on either side of it.   Someone please tell me I'm not imagining the difference in sound.

The louder the piano sounds in your room the less noise reach other places in the building. Itīs good to have it placed a bit from the wall aswell. Donīt ask me why or how it works, thatīs just what my piano tuner told me.

Must be why my instructor's piano sounds so great - it's in the middle of the room.  Plus...it's a baby grand.   Saving my pennies...

When a piano is moved to a different place, it will go out of tune. It would be better to wait a few months before tuning it to allow the piano to settle in to the new surroundings.

If the piano is badly out of tune after the move, it may be necessary to tune it and then wait a month or two and have it tuned again.

The more often a piano is tuned, the more stable the tuning becomes.

So you think I should wait a couple months until I have it tuned, now that I've moved it about 15 feet?

I was refering to the part of your original post that I quoted in my last response, but if the piano is out of tune, I would have it tuned.
