Early piano concerti
on: February 11, 2009, 09:44:21 PM
Hi everyone.
I just read a book about piano concerti before Mozart, beginning with Bach and ending with Haydn. What I am interested is the sheet music for concerti after Bach but before Haydn's D major and Mozart's early ones. The book treated Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Johann Schobert and Johann Christian Bach's concerti, so I suppose I would be especially interested in these, but if anyone has other ideas they are very welcome. I am going to play at least one of these early concerti when I have the time.
Thank you!

After spending years listening to mainly romantic concerti, i have started to collect a few bits from earlier times. I have got one scan from JC Bach which i have attached.

I have never seen any of the Schobert and I think all of my C P E Bach concerti are from a modern eiditon.

From an English point of view, Arne and Stanley might be of interest to you and i have collected some scores, but again they are from modern editions so i have not scanned them. However, i have recently scanned one of the Stanley's which is out of publishers copyright (attached). I have got the Schaffrath concerto on my shopping list, but i have yet to locate a score.

It is not always easy to find early concertos and we are pretty reliant on modern editions, since many libraries will not copy originals due to their age. I have had a couple of requests rejected by libraries for this reason.

The early concerto is not really my area of expertise (if i have one at all), but i will be reserving more time for their study.

Hope the attached helps.

My memory fades as the day gets longer and i had completely forgotten about Karl Friedrich Abel.

Pupil of JS and co-director with JC of the important subscription concerts in London.

I do have a couple by Thomas Chilcot, but they are harpsichord concerto's.

A lot of early concerti are marked for "keyboard" as i guess they could be played on piano, harpsichord, Clavicord or organ.

Thanks a lot for these works! After a quick glance, especially the Abel concerto seemed like a nice mix of the Baroque and classic concerto, though I may be wrong as I haven't actually heard any of these works. This was exactly what I was looking for. If you do come across anything else, you could just PM me. After some thought I have realised that there will probably not be any new interesting pieces and especially not concerti for me before summer. I felt when looking at the scores that I need to spend more time studying the early concerti anyway, haha. Thanks for the ideas and rare composers.

If you have Chilcot anyway, I would like to see them just for study purpose and comparison.  :)

As i work my way through my files alphabetically...........

Johann Gottlieb Graun - still available from Kalmus i think
Hohann Gottlieb Janitsch - published by McGinnis & Marx ( not tracked down a copy yet)
Johann Ludwig Krebs - still available from Barenreiter according to me scribbled notes
Jiri Ignac Linek - on my shopping list. not found a copy yet.
Johann Gottfried Muthel - massive file. I will do a link if you want.

I stop here before i get carried away. I just love concertos.

Good luck.
