Advice needed
on: March 22, 2009, 04:54:19 PM
Hi,

I started learning the piano a little over 3 weeks ago.

So far I've learnt a couple of little tunes - Oh when the Saints, Gavot and A Song of Erin - all hands together, as well as C and G major scales separately and hands together (and contrary motion for C major).

I'm stuck on what to learn next.  Can anyone give me some suggestions for other pieces that I could look at?

You should learn pieces from the little notebook by bach. THe first one is the easiest. Let me know if this helps.

From what you said it sounds like you don't have a teacher?

Well, if you do have one, ask for his/her advice they usually can set you in the right direction. If you don't i would recommend you go onto ebay or your local music shop or amazon and pick up some books and get working through. Try some beginning music theory books and a couple of grade 1 and 2 pieces books, ABRSM are quite good, also Micheal Aaron course books can be helpful. In the grade 1 and 2 books there should be plenty of little pieces to look through and start learning, but take things slow.

hope this helps.

Start learning all the major and minor chords. Then study all the white root note major scales, seperate hands should do for now. For a classical approach, start learning some Hanon excersises and perhaps have a look at some of the Czerny for beginners. Then you can venture to simple Bach or Mozart. There are a lot of basic pieces written out there, too many to list, a good rule of thumb is to always learn things that are pleasing to your ears.
