Moszkowski Etude No.8 - Lines?
on: March 27, 2009, 06:10:24 AM
can someone tell me what these diagonal lines mean? the one where they cross from treble to base on a specific note?
Playing Piano is the easiest thing in the world, All you have to do is have the right finger on the right key at the right moment.

thanks Go,

i just found this brief performance analysis of the etude in the front of the book, it says:

"the dashed lines between the notes of the middle voice indicate a transfer of voice between the hands; make this transfer as legato as possible."

is that basically the same thing you said?

also, why does it go from G to F?

No, not the same thing.

Voice = Melody

It simply is telling you where a melody is and that it is transferred between hands.

It changes from G to F# because melodies don't usually stay on the same note very long.   :P  ;)

It's just a way of indicating an inner motif. This edude apparently is meant to develop the ability to play the running eighth-note pattern while also sustaining the quarter-note inner line throughout. The lines merely indicate where you transfer between RH and LH and are there to correctly get you started on the pattern.
Durch alle Töne tönet
Im bunten Erdentraum
Ein leiser Ton gezogen
Für den, der heimlich lauschet.
