Electric Piano
on: March 31, 2009, 05:57:42 PM
Hi, i've got a five octave keyboard and my dad's thinking of buying a new electric piano, 88-key, 8 octave.
I'm guessing they are ludicrously expensive but does anyone know of any good electric pianos at a reasonable price?
I would really appreciate your advice

it depends on your price range.
I have a yamaha clavinova which cost me around £2000. Most clavinovas are good sound and feel. Id go for one with graded hammer action.
Other than that i would say a Casio PX-320 are good value for money. I got one last week and that cost me £499
or yamaha do a NP-30 series which are real budget electric piano, only 76 keys but not bad for around £150-200
good luck

Yamaha P80 is a good product for a reasonable price.

I recently bought a digital for use away from home and could only afford to spend around to £500 mark. If your budget is larger then these models may not apply.
I would also reccomend getting graded-hammer action.
I tried the Yamaha P85 and personally found the keys to be too light, maybe this was just a problem with the display model they had but I wasn't going to risk it.
I also tried the Casio Px-320 Privia, but found this to be sluggish and to have quite a 'thick' action, again this is just personal taste.
The SP-250 from Korg was also looked at but it couldn't take more than one pedal socket although the key texture felt very nice and the action was good.
I finally tried a Casio AP-200 which is a light-weight build of one of their 'fixed' digitals with a wooden base etc, (note that all those models above are portable because they only have the key bed, a stand can be bought though). This I settled with after testing it as I had all three pedals nice action and sound and it was only an extra £50 on top of what I had budgeted. It is a lot less portable though and needs to be de-/constructed when moved.
Good luck, I would advise you to try all of these models because my experience with them may be different to your own
