A bit spooky
on: April 02, 2009, 08:52:33 AM
I was practicing a slow piece of Beethoven the other night and it was very late (almost morning). And, I remember thinking it’s late and I’m tired and I think I’ll go to bed after I just get this little bit right. Just at that point as my mind was wondering off to bed and I was still happily playing away, I felt as if somebody was standing behind me. However, at my lodgings this would be almost impossible. It scared the bejesus out of me.

This happens to me not a lot, but sometimes… I wish it wouldn’t happen.

Anybody else have this problem?

Lately, while I have been improvising or practicing on the piano, I've been suddenly recalling fragments of dreams I had many many years ago and forgotten about...

(Though I've been on a lucid dreaming kick for the last few months.)

That has heppened to me and i guess it is tiredness that allows the mind to imagine things.

I was climbing down Ben Nevis a fews years back in a snowstorm and i was knackered. I was sure someone was behind me as i kept hearing footsteps, but when i stopped the, footsteps stopped as well.

Once i was certain i was making love to Pamela Anderson. Then i woke up and discovered i had ripped all the clothes off my teddybear.

In my old halls of residence the whole basement was a practice room suite. There were about 16 rooms, and about 7 of them didn't have windows. We were allowed to practice between 9am-11pm in the ones facing peoples rooms and the others were 24hours. They got no sunlight and smelt very strange....especially the ones which didn't have windows!

Once I was unprepared for a piano lesson or something and stayed up all night practicing. At about 4am I was the only person down there, practicing the last movement of Beethoven Les Adiuex sonata. It was always kind of spooky fown there, and there were many rumours going around about what the building was before it was halls of residence. I wasn't really paying attention to anything other than my practice when suddenly the lights outside the room went off. I nearly died, and completly froze (you can always hear the door open to the basement if someone enters, and this time it was silence). I went out to see if there was anyone there, and there wasn't. I turned the light back on again, and started practicing again....10 minutes later I swear someone looked into my room! I jumped out of my seat and ran to the door and looked up and down the corridor and nobody was there. I checked all the rooms and nobody was around....there was an awful feeling in the basement as well...I was really spooked. I ran and grabbed my music and fled to my room and spent the night with my headphones  practicing on the clavinova!

The creepy thing was that when I told people about this a few of them had had similar experiences!

I played in a church by myself at night and was certain I heard something whistle while I was playing. When I stopped playing the whistling stopped. I don't think it is any ghost or dead person spirit because I don't believe in that rubbish, there is always some simple reason behind it all.

I scare the hell out of visitors to my house sometimes by opening and closing the front bedroom door because as you do that it causes air pressure through the house and makes the living room glass sliding door shake like mad :) Some people have actually ran out of the house!

I constantly feel a presence around me when I play in that Anglican Church and I am all alone. It feels like there is something in the room with you. It doesn't disturb me because it is psychosomatic, it can never harm you.

Yes, I’ve heard what doesn’t hurt won’t kill you. I used to practice the trumpet in my local band hall, it was out in the sticks and far away from any houses so I used to practice late at night. For years I did this until one night I got spooked and could never practice there again at night. I once new of a pilot who flew military aircraft for years and one day when he was about to take off but he couldn’t do it. I guess it’s all, psychological. But I wonder sometimes.

In my hometown, the building that I work in was built on the town’s original graveyard. And every so often the security scanner alarm lights go on and off, but nobody has walked through. We’ve had electricians out but cannot find any problem.

One night, at about 1 AM, I was practicing through the Liszt transcription of Saint-Saens'  Danse Macabre on my electric piano, which is right in front of a wall. On that wall is a poster which is reflective enough to see the room behind me. My door was closed, and I was the only one in there, but I could swear something walked across the room. I'm getting creeped out just thinking about it!

Why, why, why do these strange happenings seem to happen at night or early morning I wonder. I have always practiced by myself in buildings and rooms of all shapes and sizes during the light of day but nothing happens except practice (not that I ever expect anything to happen anyway). These strange things always seem to happen after dusk. So many people have come and gone since time immemorium it has to be something more than just mere coincidences. Surly their souls, consciousness, spirit, character or whatever you like to call it must endup somewhere. I have to agree with you learner of liszt, it gets on my mind and gives me the jitters just thinking about it.

There are spirits that walk around but you don't see them though.
Hopefully, they are the friendly type, but most are good spirits of those that has died and just happens to be around and, some do feel their presense when it is usually dark and quiet, but even duing the day........also, these spirits are on earth, but in a different place in which there is a specific name for that by the way.....

best wishes, and sleep well........ ;)

I didn’t see them but I’m pretty sure one of them knocked into me today.

This is really weird. Today I was playing Beethoven (the second movement of his piano sonata number eight - it’s fast becoming my piece) for my mum & dad and anybody else that came into the room after lunch for Easter Sunday. I can play this movement all from memory so it gives me more scope to play with more expression. So anyway I’m playing away while investing in every note and got through the first phrase then moved on to the repeated phrase did a bit of a pause at the end of that, and moving on a little quicker with more agitation (that is how I play it) I felt to two taps into my shoulder. I got such a huge shock I stopped and swung round I thought one of my little nieces or nephews was behind me but there was nobody there and my m&d who were the only ones in the room just sitting on the lounge said, What? I said ah, nothing. I didn’t say anything and just began again but couldn’t stop thinking about it. I am Catholic so I am not supposed to be suspicious, but why would this happen today of all days, on Resurrection Sunday.

I just wish these things wouldn't happen.

When the body is tired and the mind relaxed you will be more likely to experience such events.

I don't think the day is important, as Christians cannot even agree what Sunday is Easter Sunday.

If you are worried, i would be inclined to ask your local priest for advice. That will put your mind at rest as well as the spirit who is probably trying to tell you he likes your playing.

My Aunt was worried when she kept hearing footsteps running up and down the stairs and ringing the doorbell. She had the house "blessed" and it stopped happening.

I don't believe in ghosts at all and think they're figments of the imagination.  However, I have scared myself many times and if someone asked me to go sit in a dark scary house alone at night I would never do it.  In actuality, I cannot imagine a place darker and scarier than the human mind, and I never underestimate it's power to trick and scare us.

Yes I guess so, but sometimes I think it appears to be more than that.
I don't think the day is important, as Christians cannot even agree what Sunday is Easter Sunday.

Yes I suppose. But I know, it is amazing how many people do not know this fact. It’s never mentioned schools and really only found out through the net.
If you are worried, i would be inclined to ask your local priest for advice. That will put your mind at rest as well as the spirit who is probably trying to tell you he likes your playing.

I am actually a bit skeptical of the clergy (even though I am Catholic) I don’t think the have no more insight information they anyone else on this planet, except for maybe the Pope. But I would hope it is because the spirit(s) like my playing lol.

My Aunt was worried when she kept hearing footsteps running up and down the stairs and ringing the doorbell. She had the house "blessed" and it stopped happening.

I’ve heard stories where a house-fire had burnt everything to the ground except for one wall where a Christian symbols or a statue of Mary or JC stands, I usually rack my brain for a long time trying to figure out if this is just a coincidence.

Sometimes if I'm the only person home at night, I'll run through the stuff I'm practicing a few times.  If I'm getting sick of practicing, idk why but I'll try to purposely play something that sounds 'spooky'.  There's a massive window spanning nearly the entire wall behind my piano in the sunroom, and there's a forest right outside; most of the time I'll just walk away from the piano when I'm pretty much trying to scare myself by playing freaky stuff.  I don't actually see or hear anything supernatural, it's just the perfect atmosphere from a typical horror scene, and it'll get to me  :P

Strange, I've been into music for 35 years and I cannot recall one dream about music or playing music. I guess I must have had them over the years but I just don't recall any. I guess you would only remember the bad ones anyway.

I couldn’t do this. I could never figure out how people could go to see horror movies to get purposely scared out of their pants! I guess there must be some attraction. I avoid this anyway I can, but it still happens?

I sometimes have nightmares of how I'm in houses or stores with several pianos and there's always something wrong or new to the ways the keys are organized and I can never manage to play them. Sometimes I'm naked as well. The meaning of the dreams are so obvious so I can't do anything but to laugh at them.
A friend of mine once dreamed that he had 1 hour to live in which he had to complete Sviatoslav Richters unfinished symphony. If he managed to complete it his life would be spared, but he was reasoning with himself that it wasn't really worth it since it would ruin the piece so he chose death instead. Hilarious dream.

The 'ghosts' are real, and never speak that you're not believe in it in Bali, or something bad will happen to you... Even you're not believe in it you mustn't tell it to anybody... (many places in Java are spooky too...)

Well? Me and Cai once playing piano in the music room in my school and I heard something while Cai's playing. But when Cai stopped her playing, it stopped. I asked Cai did she hear that sound, but she said she didn't hear it. But oh well, I'm so tired in that day.. Maybe just my imagination. My school is an old building from a century ago, and... not only one or two person here have counter 'them'... he =3. I've once dreamed that I've been chased by Beethoven's Ghost  ;D

I once had a dream where I sat down to play a piece in front of an audience in Carnegie Hall, and forgot the whole piece right before I began. Even more horrific, I once had a dream of playing a Steinway, but it had the touch and feel of  a Yamaha. Horrific!

I'll dream music from time to time.  Dream music is amazing, probably because there're no filters when we're in the land of nod - it's some sort of idealistic purity.

In one dream I was in a basement, friends were all around partying, having fun, causing chaos...  Alfred Brendel comes walking down and plays some stunning Liszt on the walls (there's never a piano around when ya need one!), everyone's amazed.  I've never thought to play piano on a wall so I gave it a shot, and to my surprise I did very well, until I started thinking about it and it all fell apart.  Brendel tells me to keep practicing, then goes upstairs with everyone else to party in the kitchen.

I stayed downstairs practicing on the wall until dinosaurs came rampaging through a time portal.  Sid was upset that dinosaurs were making a mess of her house so I went after 'em with grenades.  Brendel must have left, can't be fighting dinosaurs at his age.

Maybe it was Beethoven.

Hilarious dream.

;D Yes I think I would have as well!

Hi concerto_love, I cannot really understand your sentencing, but I think I get the idea. I actually wish my dreams were of music or even Beethoven, although by look of all his portraits, he would probably scare me to death anyway.

I once had a dream where I sat down to play a piece in front of an audience in Carnegie Hall, and forgot the whole piece right before I began.

I’ve actually seen that happen in real life, not at Carnegie Hall though. This kid was about to play a trumpet concerto in the Memory Section and got so nervous stopped playing, said sorry and walked off stage. G_D I felt sorry for him, with all the practice he must have done, he was actually going pretty good.

Even more horrific, I once had a dream of playing a Steinway, but it had the touch and feel of  a Yamaha. Horrific!

(With a taste of molasses in my mouth) Mmm yuck, I couldn’t think of anything worse, dream or no dream. (No hate mail please, everyone).

I wish I could say I have famous dreams but no. This is a real interesting one. I use to write mine down on paper to see if I could get them analyzed but thought I’m probably no stranger then anyone else and just gave up.

Maybe it was Beethoven.

I wish I could think that, but I don’t really consider my playing to be that action-packed that Beethoven would come to visit. I don't really consider myself a very deep person anyway. But this experience really freaked me out. I actually have my own ideas though. My mom found out from a family friend that my grandmother was an expert violinist when she was a child and gave up in her early teens. My mom only found out this information 25 years after she died. And we cannot think why this was always kept a secret. And it’s never really out of my mind every time I play. Although I do remember when my Nan on my dad's side use to play the organ in church. She use to make it sound so creepy sometimes.
