Yes, I have played a Yamaha Grand, my girl friend has one.  The key action is fine but you have to press down the keys more, but you would get used to ; also the sound is good.  Just try some out in a music store, that way you will know for sure what you prefer.

best wishes,

I suggest you go to several piano stores and try out various brands of pianos, as well as different pianos of the same model.  that way you can get a better idea of what is out there.

overall yamaha pianos are very well regarded.  of course, even within a well regarded brand, some variability is expected, so you absolutely must try the instrument you intend to purchase!

I've only tried a few yamaha's myself.  my impression was that they had a nice warm, full sound, but that it was hard to play as quietly as I would like.  a soft touch produced no sound, and by the time it would sound at all it was pretty loud.  again, this could be a characteristic of that instrument or potentially adjusted by a technician as opposed to a brand characteristic.

Yamaha makes so many models that it's a bit pointless to generalise about sound, but they don't wear well, in my (very wide) experience. The cheap ones in particular are, well, cheap - you get what you pay for.

Yamahas are very good. They are consistent. The factory makes them all sound similar, unlike Steinway, who intentionally voices them differently so you choose the one you like best.
The C series of Yamaha are the top of the line and excellent. GH's can be finicky. G's are good pianos.

I have played quite a lot of different yamaha pianos.....
i do think that some of their grand pianos are good..
But please do avoid those cheap ones...for instance C1, C2 and GC1, GC2(No offence)
I would rather get their best upright pianos(e.g. YUS 5) than getting any one of the mentioned cheap grand pianos
These grand pianos sound really loud but you can't do much with the tone colour nor create dynamic contrast on them since that's extremely difficult to play quietly on them...
But C3 and the ones which are more expensive than C3 are FANTASTIC pianos. I personally find C3 a great bargain when compared with other brands....They have beautiful sound and smooth touch...and very easy to control as well
But of course, if you have got more money...go and try more different brands before you make a decision!! Actually whether you should consider a yamaha grand piano just depends on your budjet...

Yamaha grand pianos are excellent instruments. Play different samples of the model you would like. Despite Yamaha's very reliable quality control, pianos are all slightly different because of their predominantly wood components.  In the grand range the "C" grands are highly regarded and the more hand-crafted "S" series are the most expensive.

Kind regards,
Robert.

The top of the line Yamaha Grands are the hand made S series. Overall I find the bass of Yamaha's too metallic, the Japanese like that deep bass sound, but it sounds too much for me sometimes.

I received my YAM S4 two months ago, I ordered it after 2 years of testing of all existing brands (yes, 2 years... because no room for it before that ! And because it's funny to play different grands  :) ).
To my fingers it is something like perfect, to my ears it sounds much more pleasant than a C3, but not at the level of my favourite, BOSENDORFER (much more expensive).

But it is a great grand (to my opinion). No regrets.

Yammie S4 is a nice piano.  Congrats!  How much did you pay for it?  Is it new?

Yamahas tend to be bright...but not all of them! (: The grand pianos are nice. I used to own an upright Yamaha and liked it a lot. Definitely go to several different music stores and try out contrasting pieces. My favorite pianos are Bostons and Steinways, you might want to test those too. (Pricier in general, though.)
Looking for a Baroque piece. Suggest one?
I've been looking at:

I paid it 36 000 € (I 'm living in France), and it's a new one (S4B).
I think also it's a pretty good grand especially for such a price (half of a STEIN B, here)

I live in NY and have never seen nor heard of the S series. Is it just sold across the pond?
The Boston is manufactured by Kawai. I wouldn't categorize it with the Steinway, although they desingned it. Not that Kawais are bad either. Steinway designed the Essex too and IMO, it doesn't rate.
