Romantic violin & piano pieces
on: April 14, 2009, 11:11:23 PM
First of all, so I don't seem too random, Hi :)  I lurk around here fairly often and enjoy reading everyone's posts (sometimes too much, and then I don't get any real work done...)  Anyway, I have stepped out from under my rock for a minute to ask for some input which I haven't been able to find just by searching the forums.

I have a friend who's a violinist, and we want to play something for fun together.  She's pretty good.  Based on the ratings of the music downloads available here, I'd say I'm around a grade 7/8, on a good day.  We both really like romantic-era music, which are of course a little more difficult...

Also, we'd like to perform for a music sorority of which I'm a member (she's not--yet :))  The thing is, I'm a little wary that the piano parts in violin duets can come off as just accompaniments, which would make it much more my friend's performance than mine--which is fine, except that I'm the one whose membership requires her to perform once per semester.

So the issue is finding a piece that sort of "features" both of us a little bit... and isn't terribly difficult... and is romantic, if possible, because we are female and we basically cannot get enough of the 19th century in general :)

There must be literally tens of thousands of instances that you could explore! If you're up for a real challenge, how about some 20th century candidates such as the monumental Sonata in A major by Joseph Marx or the three sonatas by Medtner?

Why not something by Fanny Hensel Mendelssohn or Clara Schumann. I think they wrote for violin and piano both of them. At least Fanny Mendelssohn and there's some arrangements as well. I think the music deserves to be heard since they were overshadowed by men who were very reluctant to woman composing, although it's probably harder to find sheets for it.

Not being a violinist and unaware of difficulty levels, i have always enjoyed the works of Sarasate.

His music never fails to charm.

You could try Fibich's Opus 10 Romance...

The piano accompaniement is demanding enough, around grade 7/8 standard I guess. Ficbich wrote some lovely music and is in my opinion sadly underplayed.
