Schubert piano works
on: April 15, 2009, 04:36:18 AM
Hi all!

I am a college student in the process of selecting new repertoire for the summer, and my teacher wants me to play Schubert, but I am not very familiar with much of his music besides the last 3 sonatas and Wanderer Fantasy.  Does anyone have any suggestions as far as a good moderate-sized Schubert work (doesn't have to be a sonata)?  I am a little overwhelmed, and my teacher kinda left it up to me to pick something I like...

I just learned a wonderful early two movement sonata by Schubert, D.566. There are two other movements that some musicologists think were meant to be part of the sonata. Kempff uses the two original movements and Richter includes one of the additional movements (a Scherzo) as the second movement.

Here are links for Richter's performance on youtube:

(Original first movement)
(Scherzo composed separately later)
(Original second movement)

Unfortunately the Kempff version has been removed from youtube. It is really quite lovely.

Any of Schubert's impromptus are nice. I've played Op90 no 2 in c minor and no 3 in Gflat major. There are also the 6 Moments musicaux, Op94.

I'm not too sure of a lot of Schubert piano works, I'm better acquanted with his works for voice, but hopefully you'll like the above suggestions :)

When you have a question about repertoire go here https://www.pianopedia.com/cp_5_w_schubert.aspx

anyway, I would suggest the three klavierstucke, but it may be a little long.

D. 784

I prefer it to 958 and 959.

The 3 Klavierstuecke (946) are great, as already said.
Superb, sublime sonatas other than the last three:

D575
D664
D784
D845
D894 (Richter's favorite sonata, you can find it on youtube).

Although I don't like D850 that much, the slow movement has some of the most exquisite music I know.
