I'm going to make practicing fun!
on: April 19, 2009, 10:59:17 PM
As I have been practicing new and difficult pieces these past few weeks, today I realize I need to do something different with my practice routine.  I usually do  Hanon, which is a mechanical means towards getting my fingers to move and go quickly.  Then, of course, the usual drill of the Czerny books, which is a part of my sightreading.  Then the pieces, which is a variety---Chopin, Bach's Prelude and Fugues, Debussy, and my daily dose of sonatinas.  Now, what I am realizing is this:  I am missing my easy pieces that I just enjoy playing.  So I am going to set a whole day aside just "for fun" and play whatever my heart desires.  It can be some of my jazz tunes, some pieces from my other piano literature books and pieces that I have not played for a long time.  I don't know what it is that makes me feel I HAVE to practice each day the same pieces.  So I hope this will help me enjoy the difficult pieces that I am striving to learn and when I miss a day of not playing those pieces, then my mind and fingers will be more refreshed.  It's kind of like an *sigh* feeling.  Life will go on whether or not I practice the difficult pieces, but I need to keep in mind , that I can always enjoy my easy pieces also.

best wishes,

I agree.  I always have devoted one day a week to fooling around.  (On the piano folks!)
I will usually spend a half an hour of practice on Fridays to play whatever moves me.  Or some day when I can not concentrate I will just play improve.  Sometime banging on the piano with large obnoxious chords helps refocus my mind.
I am no longer fighting my inner demons.  We are now all on the same side.

I wonder if we learn a new difficult piece, is it needed to practice it every day?
by the way, are you a piano teacher go12_3?
Hope someday I'll be a good pianist ^.^

Yes, I am a piano teacher, fenz.  And practicing a difficult piece can be done on some parts each day, so that you will learn a portion at a time.  And in a few weeks, as you get the fingering and the notes more familiar, then the passages will blend more together as you play the piece.
